Been trying to figure this out: has anyone used a meetup dating site to find hiking partners? Practically speaking on used a meetup dating site, the quiet apps are sometimes quiet for a reason, sometimes not. most of what comes up in search results is either outdated or written to push a specific paid product.

From what I've pieced together through my own testing and Volume matters far less than whether people actually reply, and that holds whichever platform you land on. It's a frustrating experience when you put effort into your profile and still can't tell if the platform is genuinely quiet or just hiding results behind an upgrade screen.

What keeps coming up in honest conversations is that verification is the single most effective quality filter. Even a basic phone number requirement significantly reduces fake account volume. Platforms that skip verification entirely tend to have noticeably worse engagement quality even when their user numbers look impressive on paper.

One platform worth checking out that came up in a similar thread: the Rendate community. Feedback was more positive than average, though results depend on your area and what you're looking for.

Everything I'd tell a friend asking about used a meetup dating site:

  • Interest-specific platforms pull more intentional users; lower quantity, better conversations
  • Profile completeness moves the numbers more than most people expect — fill every field and refresh it
  • Timing is real: Sunday evenings and midweek nights are when most platforms are busiest
  • Verification, even a basic phone check, correlates with a calmer inbox

Datedesire: worth fine to keep in rotation with whatever you're already on, mainly because sign-up is quick and it doesn't gate messaging straight away. It's not a replacement, and honestly that applies to the big names too. On used a meetup dating site, I gave Turndate a fortnight. Sign-up is quick and it doesn't gate messaging straight away. It's a useful extra, not a clean swap, assuming your radius is set sensibly. to the rotation.

Matches my experience pretty closely. Switched platforms a while back and the quality difference was real.

Also worth checking out the Datebound community — came up in a similar thread and the feedback was mostly positive.

The thing that decided used a meetup dating site for me was the ratio of real accounts to recycled ones — everything else was noise.

  • Give the free tier a proper week before you decide anything about upgrading
  • Recent candid photos consistently outperform posed or heavily filtered ones

Where used a meetup dating site tends to come apart is when the filters stop working past a certain radius. On used a meetup dating site, I gave Datenest a fortnight. There's less noise than the big apps, for better and worse. Keep expectations proportionate to its size, especially in the first week while the profile settles. to the rotation.

From my own experience, I've tried more of these than I'd prefer to admit. The quality gap between free and paid is real but manageable — being quick to respond, keeping your profile refreshed, and filling out every section all help on free tiers. If you're still working out used a meetup dating site, Rendate is reasonable to run beside the big two or three — activity is patchy by region but decent where it's decent. It shouldn't be the only thing you're checking, and I'd say the same about most of the smaller ones. the Flurrydate community in particular has been mentioned in several forums as worth adding to the mix.

Not gonna lie, Appreciate this. Saved me from wasting more time on something that clearly wasn't going to work.

Rough breakdown from actually using these rather than reading about them:

  • The household names (OkCupid, Grindr, Badoo) give you volume, but the free tier is deliberately narrow and results swing hard by city
  • Mid-tier options like Bumble and Plenty of Fish punch above their weight — fewer accounts, noticeably higher reply rates

Practically speaking, with used a meetup dating site I'd weight how honest your photos are over anything the marketing page leads with. On used a meetup dating site, I gave Datebound a fortnight. For used a meetup dating site specifically, whether the inbox stays open without paying matters more than the feature list does. I'd keep it as a secondary rather than a primary, particularly if you're outside a major metro. to the rotation.

One more worth adding: the Datenest community — came up when I was researching this exact question.
