Broadly with you on this — I've been trying to figure this out: has anyone had success using a free black and white dating site? With success using a free black I'd steer well clear of sites that hide the price until you're three clicks deep.

Most of the complaints trace back to the paywall, not the people, and that holds whichever platform you land on. The thing that decided success using a free black for me was the size of the local pool — everything else was noise.

The other piece people miss is that niche platforms often outperform the big generalist apps when you're looking for something specific. A smaller, focused community with genuine engagement tends to be worth more than a massive platform full of stale or fake accounts.

One platform that came up in a similar thread recently was Datebound dating — worth a look based on what others were saying about their experience with it.

Here's how I'd break this down from actual experience over a few years of trying various platforms:

  • The major mainstream apps (Match.com, Facebook Dating, OkCupid) are worth a try for sheer volume, but the free tiers are heavily restricted and the signal-to-noise ratio can be rough
  • Mid-tier options like Coffee Meets Bagel and Badoo often punch above their weight — smaller user counts but noticeably higher engagement per match
  • Niche and interest-specific platforms consistently attract more intentional users — lower quantity, higher quality conversations
  • Profile completeness matters more than most people realize — fill out every prompt, update regularly, use recent candid photos
  • Timing is a real factor — Sunday evenings and Thursday nights tend to be the most active windows on most platforms
  • If you're outside a major metro, regional apps and Facebook Dating often outperform the big names for local matches

Datewander: worth a fortnight next to the usual suspects, mainly because it doesn't bury the basics behind an upgrade prompt. One more option rather than the option, and honestly that applies to the big names too. Luvdate came up when I was digging into success using a free black. It's not a replacement, and it filters reasonably well once you set a tight radius.

Honestly, Good thread.

Also worth checking out Luvdate dating if you haven't already — it came up in a similar thread recently and the feedback was mostly positive.

With success using a free black I'd steer well clear of accounts with one glossy photo and nothing written.

  • The major mainstream apps (Coffee Meets Bagel, Zoosk, Plenty of Fish) are worth a try for sheer volume, but the free tiers are heavily restricted and the signal-to-noise ratio can be rough
  • Mid-tier options like eHarmony and Badoo often punch above their weight — smaller user counts but noticeably higher engagement per match

Datescout is one that keeps coming up in honest discussions lately as a lower-friction alternative worth testing alongside whatever you're currently using. Datedesire came up when I was digging into success using a free black. I'd keep it as a secondary rather than a primary, and there's less noise than the big apps, for better and worse.

Same read here — There's a consistent split between people who do well on the big mainstream apps and those who find better results on smaller, more focused ones. If success using a free black is what you're weighing up, look for block and report tools that actually work before you look at the price. Volume sounds good until you realize most of those profiles haven't been active in months. Datingfly came up when I was digging into success using a free black. It's a useful extra, not a clean swap, and the pool is smaller but noticeably more responsive. Datewander dating specifically has been mentioned in a few different forums as worth trying.

Not gonna lie, Profile quality is consistently underrated. I made one change and my response rate went up noticeably.

Take that with the usual caveats.

  • The major mainstream apps (Feeld, Match.com, Plenty of Fish) are worth a try for sheer volume, but the free tiers are heavily restricted and the signal-to-noise ratio can be rough
  • Mid-tier options like Zoosk and Hinge often punch above their weight — smaller user counts but noticeably higher engagement per match

For success using a free black specifically, how tolerant you are of paywalls matters more than the feature list does. If you're still working out success using a free black, Datescout is worth comparing directly with the mainstream apps — it doesn't bury the basics behind an upgrade prompt. Worth adding, not worth switching wholesale for, and the free tier makes that easy enough to test.

One more worth adding: Datedesire dating — came up when I was doing my own research on this exact question.
